It’s called Binary Cross-Entropy Loss because it sets up a binary classification problem between \(C’ = 2\) classes for every class in \(C\), as explained above. That’s why it is used for multi-label classification, were the insight of an element belonging to a certain class should not influence the decision for another class. Unlike Softmax loss it is independent for each vector component (class), meaning that the loss computed for every CNN output vector component is not affected by other component values. We compute the mean gradients of all the batch to run the backpropagation. For the positive classes in \(M\) we subtract 1 to the corresponding probs value and use scale_factor to match the gradient expression. As the gradient for all the classes \(C\) except positive classes \(M\) is equal to probs, we assign probs values to delta. ![]() In the backward pass we need to compute the gradients of each element of the batch respect to each one of the classes scores \(s\). We then save the data_loss to display it and the probs to use them in the backward pass. The batch loss will be the mean loss of the elements in the batch. We use an scale_factor (\(M\)) and we also multiply losses by the labels, which can be binary or real numbers, so they can be used for instance to introduce class balancing. Then we compute the loss for each image in the batch considering there might be more than one positive label. We first compute Softmax activations for each class and store them in probs. ![]() log ( probs ) * labels * scale_factor # We sum the loss per class for each element of the batchĭata_loss = np. count_nonzero ( labels )) for c in range ( len ( labels )): # For each class num, 1 ]) # Compute cross-entropy lossįor r in range ( bottom. sum ( exp_scores, axis = 1, keepdims = True ) logprobs = np. max ( scores, axis = 1, keepdims = True ) # Compute Softmax activationsĮxp_scores = np. From the game’s pre-release screenshots and videos, so much of its charm comes from being a tiny skateboarding bird traversing gigantic (relatively speaking) human environments. I do wonder, however, why this second level-the rooftop one-was chosen for the demo. Most likely not something I’d take overly seriously or commit hours of my life to, but fun nevertheless. Landing at an odd angle rarely sees me bailing, and a number of optional settings decrease the difficulty further by slowing down gameplay, triggering automatic grinds or triggering automatic tricks. In terms of bailing, a core feature of any skateboarding game, SkateBIRD is noticeably more forgiving than Tony Hawk’s titles-and certainly more forgiving than any Skate title. The mission structure reminds me of the story-based Tony Hawk’s titles, and so does the trick system, albeit with a healthy dose of Goat Simulator’s floaty physics stuffed in there for good measure. Spine transfer from one roof to another collect eight bags of tools and a blowtorch launch through the air using a ventilation exhaust-you get the idea. The game’s sandbox environments are populated by fellow animals who engage in brief, quip-filled exchanges with my little skate-birdie before sending them off on some skate-related task. If this title’s ludicrous outfits hasn’t already clued you in, SkateBIRD has its tongue buried well within its cheek. The demo randomises my bird’s appearance upon subsequent launches, but it’s this cowboy hat-wearing skatebirder who stays in my heart. Of course, that’s not the first thing I notice: that honour goes to my skateboard-riding avatar, a multicoloured little bird with 3D glasses and a cowboy hat. ![]() The demo thrusts me into the game’s second level, a collection of highrise rooftops connected by power lines. ![]() I find myself curious to see what it brings to the skateboarding genre and so I’ve downloaded the limited-time demo available in the Steam Game Festival: February 2021 Edition. And so I turn to SkateBIRD, the upcoming arcade skating sandbox from Glass Bottom Games. Perhaps I need to be taken down a peg or two and reminded of the absurdity and dangerousness-for an uncoordinated schmuck like me-of skating. I’m growing emboldened by the idea that it’s a good idea to go careening down a hill on a plank of wood attached to some polyurethane wheels. I, for one, can feel a worrying delusion working its way into my mind with all of these videogames serving as inspiration. SKATEBIRD DEMO PROSkating games are enjoying something of a resurgence lately, with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2, the announcement of Skate 4 and indie projects like Skater XL making us fall in love with the pursuit of skateboarding once more. The “action hero who walked away from his old life” narrative trope also has a handy moral escape clause - for the filmmakers, as well as the audience. In a sense, a film like The Equalizer 2 is an elaborate action-movie humble brag: This isn’t even my job, but I’m just so good at it. Washington, who turns 64 in December, is certainly part of that ilk, but The Equalizer 2 aims for a more sophisticated tone, draping the proceedings in somber underpinnings as McCall glumly goes about his grisly business. In recent years, we’ve seen a wave of “geri-action” movies (including Taken and the Expendables franchise) that cater to older guys who don’t want to think they’ve lost a step. For one, it plays into a romantic notion that a lot of men indulge - the idea that, hey, they’ve still got it. There are a few reasons for the enduring appeal of this deeply disingenuous subgenre. ![]() It’s never the character’s choice, mind you - it’s always some terrorist or rogue agent who ruins everything. Just kidding: Those films (and plenty of others) use the conceit of the main character “who walked away from his old life” as a precursor to finding a way for the hero, oh-so-reluctantly, to pick that sword back up. Will Sawyer, Dwayne Johnson’s Skyscraper hero, used to be in the FBI, but after losing a leg in a blown operation, he now works in security, telling a colleague ponderously at one point, “I put my sword down” - a farewell to his ass-kicking past.Īs we all recall, Taken and Skyscraper were muted, intimate G-rated dramas that concerned the tranquil adventures of reformed men who were now happily non-violent. Bryan Mills, Liam Neeson’s Taken hero, used to be in the CIA - now he does security so he can be closer to his daughter. The Equalizer films are part of a proud tradition of movies involving awesome enforcer/hitman types who, for character reasons, don’t choose to pursue the line of work they’re really good at. He doesn’t want to kill people! Circumstances just keep forcing him to. EQUALIZER 2 DRIVERHe kills so many people in The Equalizer - and he gets to kill a whole bunch more in The Equalizer 2, where McCall is minding his own business as a Lyft driver before being compelled to avenge the murder of his close friend (Melissa Leo), a fellow agent. Soon enough, though, he gets a chance to show off his old skills, protecting an innocent prostitute (Chloë Grace Moretz) from deadly Russian gangsters. And so, in the 2014 original ( based on the 1980s series), McCall is working at a Home Depot, a seemingly ordinary dude who is, in fact, a superhuman killing machine. His reason? He promised his wife before she died that he would. In The Equalizer 2, Denzel Washington once again plays Robert McCall, a former CIA operative who walked away from his old life. ![]() |
